The story of the Moscow Mule began in 1941 in the USA and is a fascinating example of how brilliant marketing saved three struggling entrepreneurs. John Martin was unsuccessfully trying to sell the rights to Smirnoff vodka in America, a spirit Americans did not yet know, while his friend Jack Morgan owned a bar and did not know what to do with his stocks of homemade ginger beer. Then a third entrepreneur entered the picture — she needed to sell a full warehouse of copper mugs with a donkey logo. Together they mixed all three ingredients — vodka, ginger beer and lime — and poured them into a copper mug. This clever move launched a massive boom in America, taught Americans to drink vodka and gave birth to an immortal cocktail classic.
