The story began with the famous English corsair Francis Drake, whose crew on Cuba mixed raw cane distillate with lime and mint as a remedy against illness. In the 19th century, this fiery pirate medicine was transformed into an elegant social cocktail thanks to smooth white rum, soda and crushed ice. The drink's name was probably derived from the Cuban word "mojo", meaning magic or charm. The true worldwide boom was then kicked off by American writer Ernest Hemingway, who fell in love with this refreshment at the Havana bar La Bodeguita del Medio.
